Mumbai Day 24: Housing Without Developers?

Posted on by Taylor

Yesterday I attended a conference presented by Studio X, a division of Columbia's GSAPP program. Entitled "Housing Without Developers," the conference brought together ten architects, urbanists, and activists in Mumbai to discuss the problems associated with developer-led construction within the city. Specifically, each lecturer brought to light advantages and disadvantages of a developer-free design and construction methodology, its present implications within the city (especially in terms of informal/slum developments), and what this might mean for Mumbai in coming decades. Conversations were very spirited, with a wide range of opinions on how best to affect change in Mumbai in both the short- and long-term.
