Mumbai Day 28: By Train

Posted on by Taylor

Train travel in Mumbai comprises a key portion of the city's public transit system. More than six million people navigate via train every day, principally driving traffic between the northern-most and southern-most extents of the city. Train cars are divided into four types: first class, second class, male, and female compartments. A second-class train ticket costs ten rupees (or $0.20 US).

For those who commute to Mumbai from the outer extremes of the city, it is not uncommon to see organized activities take place on the train during long trips: knitting clubs, for example, hold meetings regularly in female compartments during hours-long journeys from the city's farthest reaches.

Below are photos from an inaugural trip between Bandra (the southern-most suburb of Mumbai) and Churchgate Station (the train's southern-most tip; recently glamorized in the film Slumdog Millionaire).
