Mumbai Day 33: Worli Fishing Colony

Posted on by Taylor

Located at the northernmost tip of South Mumbai, Worli fishing colony is an informal development seemingly unaffected by the passage of time. At dawn, men set sail in small fishing boats to collect their day's catch; large expanses of shore are used for the drying of caught fish. A small Christian chapel and Hindu temple occupy the northernmost tip of the peninsula, both overlooking the sea below. It is entirely of an unauthorized and unplanned nature, and, at the colony's heart, every square inch of land is occupied by single-room residences, small shops, and winding alleyways.

Perhaps the only reminder of the present-day here is the newly-constructed Sealink, a multi-million-dollar toll road, which now eavesdrops upon the colony's seaboard.
